How Long Can You Use Eye Makeup Before Replacing It?

A+A-

Eye makeup comes in many forms: eyeshadow, mascara, eyeliner pencils, liquid eyeliner, and more. Each of them touches the sensitive areas around the eye whenever you use them, and this introduces a lot of bacteria to the makeup. Over time, that bacteria grows and can spread to your eye.

Ideally, you should replace your eye makeup before it gets to that point. Products like mascara and liquid eyeliner should be thrown out every three months since they are prone to bacteria growth. Cream eyeshadow should be tossed after about six months. Pencil eye liners and powder eyeshadow can last up to two years before they must be tossed. However, if you notice a chance in consistency, smell, or appearance to any of your makeup products, it’s probably time to toss them. That way, when you put your makeup on, your eyes remain safe and healthy.
