Medical vs. Vision Insurance

Understanding Your Eye Care Coverage

Medical and vision insurance serve different purposes and cover different types of care.

Vision Insurance

Vision insurance is designed primarily for routine eye care and may include:

  • Routine vision exams

  • Updating glasses prescriptions

  • Contact lens evaluations (Infocus Eye Care does not offer contact lens service).

  • Glasses and contact lens benefits

Medical Insurance

Medical insurance is used when diagnosing, monitoring, or treating eye health conditions and medical concerns affecting the eyes. Examples may include:

  • Cataracts

  • Glaucoma

  • Dry eye disease

  • Diabetic exams or diabetes related eye changes

  • Eye infections

  • Eye injuries

  • Flashes and floaters

  • Eye pain

  • Other symptoms affecting eye health

How Infocus Eye Care Bills Insurance

As a specialty clinic focused on medical and surgical eye care, Infocus Eye Care bills medical insurance when you are seen by one of our providers for the diagnosis, treatment, or management of eye health concerns.

Vision insurance may be billed if you are being seen for a ROUTINE Vision Exam. This only applies if we are contracted (in-network) with your vision insurance provider. Your medical and vision benefits may not be through the same insurance provider as vision benefits are frequently contracted out to a VISION specific insurance plan such as VSP or EyeMed. Infocus Eye Care is NOT in contract with any vision specific insurance providers.

Understanding Refractions and Glasses Prescriptions

A refraction is the test used to determine your eyeglass prescription. During medical visits, our providers may also perform a diagnostic refraction to help monitor visual acuity for certain medical conditions.

Please note:

  • Refractions are typically not covered by most medical insurance plans as it is considered a vision benefit.

  • A refraction provides you with an updated glasses prescription that may be used at any optical shop.

  • If you have vision insurance, you may submit an itemized statement directly to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. You can request an itemized statement from our Front Office Staff and this request may take 2-3 weeks to process.

  • If you are seen for a medical exam and request an updated glasses prescription, this service may require an additional $55 fee.

Routine Vision Exams

Infocus Eye Care is not currently accepting new patients for standard routine vision exams.

If you do not have any known eye health concerns and are only seeking an updated glasses prescription, we recommend scheduling with a local optometrist.

Please note: Insurance coverage is determined by your insurance carrier. Patients remain responsible for any applicable co-pays, deductibles, or non-covered services.
