About Cataracts

Eye Care Specialists Serving Bend, OR and Surrounding Areas

Are you using eyeglasses, magnifying lenses, large print, and brighter lighting to counteract the effects of cataracts on your vision? At Infocus Eye Care, we offer real solutions for cataracts right here in Bend, Oregon.

Cataract surgery is a simple, outpatient procedure that takes approximately 10 minutes to perform. Using mild IV sedation and anesthetic eye drops, one of our board-certified eye surgeons, Dr. Ida Alul or Dr. Patricia Buehler, will prepare you for surgery to ensure maximum comfort. Then, using the safe, state-of-the-art surgical technology, the surgeon will extract your old, clouded lens and replace it with an artificial intraocular lens. In addition to providing a solution to your cataract, your new lens can often correct other vision disorders such as nearsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia.

Recovery from Cataract Surgery

Most patients recover from cataract surgery within one or two days. During this time, some itching and mild discomfort is normal. Your eyes may also be more sensitive to light and touch. These issues generally resolve themselves within 48 hours, allowing you to resume normal activities. We recommend you wait to perform strenuous activities for at least two weeks after your surgery. Your eye should be completely healed within eight weeks.

During your recovery, your eyeglasses prescription will change. Your vision is expected to fluctuate for approximately the first month while your eye adjusts to your new lens. Many patients find they need to use glasses much less frequently after cataract surgery. For patients who desire more freedom from eyeglasses by reducing their use of reading glasses, advanced multifocal or accommodating lifestyle lenses may be the best option.

Risks of Cataract Surgery

The risk of complications with cataract surgery is extremely rare. However, you should be aware of potential risks when considering any surgery. Some of these risks include infection, bleeding, inflammation, vision difficulties, and fluctuations in eye pressure. Your eye surgeon will discuss the risks of cataract surgery during your consultation.

Our board-certified ophthalmic surgeons take great care when performing this surgery to reduce complications. We pride ourselves on offering patients in Central Oregon a safe, effective way to restore vision.
